What is an automated external defibrillator (AED)?

DATE:2024-04-10 AUTHOR:ADA MED SUPPLY LIMITED

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device mainly used to defibrillate cardiac arrest patients in emergency situations to restore their normal heart rhythm. By detecting the patient's heart rhythm, the AED automatically analyzes whether a shock is needed for defibrillation, and automatically charges and delivers a shock when necessary. This device provides non-professionals with an effective tool to resuscitate cardiac arrest victims in emergency situations.

The use of AED is very simple, generally just follow the instructions on the device. When a patient suddenly falls to the ground, loses consciousness and is not breathing or only gasping for breath, the patient should be immediately laid flat on the ground or a hard board and the safety of the scene should be ensured. Then obtain an AED as soon as possible and follow the voice or visual prompts. While the AED is analyzing the heart rhythm and preparing for shock, all personnel should be kept away from the patient and avoid contact with the patient's body.

It should be noted that the AED does not guarantee that it will successfully restore the patient's heart rhythm every time, but it does buy the patient valuable rescue time while waiting for the arrival of professional medical personnel. Therefore, in an emergency, you should use an AED for first aid as soon as possible and call the emergency hotline to seek professional medical assistance.

In general, AED is a very important first aid equipment, and it is very necessary for non-professionals to master its use. Through the use of AED, timely assistance can be provided to patients in emergency situations of cardiac arrest and the success rate of rescue can be improved.
